Gunman opens fire in Phoenix motel room: 1 dead, 5 hurt

A gunman opened fire inside a motel room in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa on Wednesday, killing a man and wounding two women before shooting three more people as he sought to elude an exhaustive manhunt that ended in his capture, police said.

Officers using a stun gun subdued the suspected gunman, identified as Ryan Elliot Giroux, 41, at a vacant condominium where he had taken refuge, some four hours after the initial shooting, Mesa police spokesman Esteban Flores told reporters.

Local NBC affiliate 12 News showed a man being led out of the residential complex in a white full-body suit, his wrists shackled, and taken to a local hospital.

Anti-hate group the Southern Poverty Law Centre, citing a retired Mesa police detective, identified Giroux as a member of skinhead and white supremacist groups who had served prison time for burglary, marijuana possession and attempted aggravated assault.

Tanya Ehrig, who said her sister was present at the motel when gunfire erupted there, told local ABC 15 News that her sister’s boyfriend was killed in that altercation.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey said in a statement he had spoken to the mayor of Mesa and offered resources, including from the Department of Public Safety

After Chelsea and Arsenal getting knocked out of the champions league, Manchester City was the only English team left in the last 16 round. Barca came into the tie with a 2-1 lead away from home, the fixture seemed close on paper but Messi’s brilliance turned the match around.

Secret Service Wants a Fake White House to Help Protect the Real One

The director of the US secret service has described an elaborate plan to build an $8 million replica of the White House in Maryland complete with fountains, grass and shrubbery to assist with agent training. Director Joseph Clancy, who has the task of building the secret service back after multiple public drunkenness scandals and a leadership overhaul, asked the House appropriations committee on Tuesday to support the construction of the fake White House.

“In all seriousness, though, the secret service request will come under tough scrutiny given our nation’s rapidly increasing debt and the agency’s numerous missteps over the past several years.” said Dan Holler, a spokesperson for the conservative group Heritage Action.

Clancy also said the secret service was currently making plans for a new fence to be built around the actual White House, but it would take a year and a half. The new plan calls for “putting something on top of the fence that will deter people from climbing and prevent them from getting over”, Clancy said. “We recognise that that’s a long time to wait, a year and a half.”
